High Dartmoor Expedition

A three-day programme giving students the chance to develop basic expedition skills, explore Dartmoor's wilder areas and learn more about its landscape and wildlife.

THE PROGRAMME

Explore some of the hidden areas of Dartmoor. Experience camping wild in a secluded valley, trekking into the deep and little visited Upper Dart Gorge and see one of Dartmoor’s most beautiful tributaries.

The 3 day-2 night programme is designed to challenge and inform, focusing on team work and how to discover personal strengths.
This programme is our most demanding Expedition and is best suited to Year 5+*.

The programme includes a 2-day walking expedition. While on expedition the groups will navigate, wild camp, rock climb, abseil, and complete team challenges. The programme will have various elements to challenge students and develop good team work.

*It is possible to adjust the programme for younger students.

Day 1

Meet at Powdermills Bunkhouse, settle in and unpack.

Briefing and preparation for the expedition.

Depart carrying personal food and kit. All tents, base camp supplies and any other luggage are driven to the campsite ready for arrival.

The team will navigate a scenic route over open moorland, taking in rivers, farms and ancient ruins. Arrival at the campsite reveals a beautiful sheltered spot on the East Dart River. There will be plenty of time to relax and to enjoy simple camp activities. The groups will set up their tents, get advice on camp craft, and cook simple food on gas stoves.

Day 2

After packing up and leaving overnight kit behind the group continues its journey into the upper Dart valley. We follow the “Double Dart” River into an area of temperate rainforest arriving at the remote crag of Luckey Tor. Here we have lunch and take on the climbing and abseiling challenge this outcrop has to offer.

We finally depart, following the river until we begin a winding climb to the summit of Mel Tor. We finally arrive to meet our transport at Bel Tor corner. The day ends back at Powdermills Bunkhouse, where after settling in we enjoy a hearty supper and a relaxing evening.

Day 3

There are a few options for the final day, but the most popular choice are team challenges. With a range of problem solving tasks and direction from the instructional staff, the team examines how we can work together effectively to complete complex tasks. This will eventually result in preventing a radiation leak and rescuing a casualty! After a debrief and lunch the team depart for home
