Adventure Challenge
Our school-based programme is a great way to discuss resilience and well-being through enjoyable team centred activities.
We offer daytime activity sessions with the option of overnight camping in the school grounds.

The Programme
Adventure Challenge is a stand alone programme of team building activities.
This normally takes place in 1 or 2 hour sessions where the children work in teams of 6 to complete a selection of short challenges that rely on co-operation, team effort and individual resilience.
Different Learning Styles
Our unique tasks are designed and built to cater for a wide range of learning styles.
Each activity stimulates interaction with existing relationships using positive stress in a non-threatening environment.
Strong emphasis is placed on communication, reasoning and problem- solving skills.
The choices of physical and cognitive tasks challenge pupils of all ages and abilities but most importantly, the challenges are great fun!
Supporting Learning
We provide an alternative route into personal development focusing on resilience, individual well-being and thinking of the needs of others.
The direction of these sessions is ultimately fuelled by the observations we make on children's behaviour and we talk about the emotions that triggered certain behaviours.
During a session we underline the important messages of:
- adapting to situations
- staying on task
- remembering plans
- the awareness, validation and use of emotions.
"All emotions are OK but not all behaviour is OK"
(Gottman, 1997)
Learning Through Experience & Working Together
Adventure Challenge offers positive stress* in order to allow children to practice their executive function and self-regulation** responses.
We aim to address and talk about how to build resilience from relationships using our unique and enjoyable challenges.
During our sessions we endeavour to separate the children's experiences from the task. The individual problem-solving ability of the children can be excellent while their coping skills tend to be weaker in the face of a little adversity.
Our prime objective is always to ensure our conversations can be transferred to create security in all types of relationships, particularly in the home or school environment and the growing online community.
The Review Process
Reflecting on our performance and understanding how we may change is at the core of experiential learning.
We encourage discussion on the way we interact with others, as this plays a crucial role in developing relationships. Even a short session can give insights into individuals and groups, providing stimulus for work long after our visit.
We are keen to reflect the learning objectives, values and ethos of the schools we visit and are happy to discuss this prior to our sessions.

Testimonials
The Adventure Challenge activities provided our children with the opportunity to trust themselves and the relationships they have with those around them to work as a team and solve problems... Sometimes the children weren't successful but they always had time to reflect on the reason for that, then put things in place so they would be more successful next time... oh and they had great fun doing it!
- Haytor View Primary School
The children enjoyed the challenge of the activity and accessed the deeper meaning of the tasks, mainly based around how to deal with frustration in a team. This is something that we have brought into class on a day to day basis and continue to access even after the team have left. I could not recommend the Young Spirit team enough!"
- St Catherines Primary School
I was really impressed that the usual 'what makes good teamwork' discussions moved on to thinking about the feelings that children may have experienced while taking part in the challenges. They had the opportunity to stop and reflect on the range of emotions felt, and how these impacted on the groups overall performance.

Our Key Stage Two were very fortunate to participate in a very special Adventure Challenge Day. It involved the children working in teams of 6, to complete a selection of short challenges that relied on co-operation, team effort and individual resilience.
