Are Maps a Mystery?  No more!

"I wish I could navigate better"  How often have you said that, when the mist is appearing over the hill?   Well now is your chance to do something about it - a day to get your head around the basics.

Join us on this practical course in Dartmoor National Park and get your head around the skills required.  This is your first step towards making your days out more fun, safer, and a bit more adventurous perhaps...

Spirit of Adventure will provide friendly, experienced instructors to make your day out fun and a real learning experience.

All you need to bring is your normal walking kit, boots, waterproofs, packed lunch, warm clothing etc.  if you have a Dartmoor map and compass bring them along but if you don't, no problem - we can lend for the course.

Course Content

This is a practical course and will take place in Dartmoor National Park.  It is focused on the basics of navigation and will progress at a pace that suits the group members.  Topics include:

• Understanding maps - orientation and scales
• Discussion of the most important map symbols
• Understanding grid references
• Relating your map to the ground shape and contours
• Strategies for finding a feature (micro navigation)
• Identifying the features all around
• Pacing and timing distances
• Measuring and walking on a bearing
• Relocation strategies (how to find where you are if you get lost)
