Spirit of Adventure was formed in 1993 and specialises in providing adventure holidays and activity courses in the UK and overseas. We are based in the heart of Dartmoor, close to Exmoor, and these two venues form the perfect location for all Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions. Dartmoor and Exmoor are both accessible wild country areas.

Spirit of Adventure is an approved D of E provider for training and expeditions and works successfully with many schools on their closed expeditions. Now we are providing the opportunity for small groups or individuals who cannot do their expedition at school to undertake an expedition with us on Dartmoor. We will provide the support and expertise to make it fun, enjoyable and, most importantly, a success - you just need to bring your motivation and a “spirit of adventure”

Powder Mills ‘our home and base’

Spirit of Adventure resides at the famous Powder mills, the perfect position for us to monitor and support your groups, whether they are out on the North or South Dartmoor.

Dartmoor is our backyard and our instructors are local and know and understand the terrain here so well. They have a real passion about this fantastic wild area of the Southwest.  Many are members of the Dartmoor Rescue Group.

All of the ‘Spirit of Adventure’ DofE instructor team are ML / WGL qualified, First Aid trained, DBS checked and have many years of valuable experience working with young people in the outdoors .

Open Gold Practice Expeditions

How It Works

Our practice expeditions will be undertaken around the south of Dartmoor. This will give you the opportunity to undertake our open Gold qualifying expedition as this takes place on the north of Dartmoor. The routes will be pre planned and you will be guided through the practice week by a qualified member of the Spirit of Adventure team. All aspects of the skills necessary to undertake a successful expedition will be covered.

You will arrive on Sunday evening and have a chance to get to know each other, staying in the bunkhouse.

We will undertake a day practice walk with your instructor on the Monday.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be the days that you will undertake your practice expedition which will involve two nights camping. Your accommodation will be the bunkhouse on the Thursday night and you will depart on the Friday.

What we provide

  • Pre expedition information containing all you will need to know, e.g. kit lists
  • Bunkhouse accommodation for the first and last night of the expedition week. This means that you are able to meet you new team mates in relaxed comfortable surroundings and gives us a base to fine tune the detail of the expedition
  • Camping fees whilst on the expedition
  • Supervision whilst out on expedition
  • All personal equipment as shown on the kit list

What you need to arrange
