The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance scheme for all ages. You can progress through the scheme in three stages Bronze, Silver and Gold. This enables those totally new to navigation to practice, improve and progress their skills at a pace that most suits them. You can if you wish, if you are more competent, be assessed at any point. It is worth noting that these are not leadership awards and that they only show your personal proficiency at a set navigational standard.
A brief overview of the stages and standards are as follows
Bronze Award
On completion of this award, participants will be able to plan and follow simple walks in the countryside mainly on paths and tracks.
Silver Award
On completion of this award participants will be able to plan and follow walks in the countryside away from paths and tracks.
Gold Award
On completion of this award, participants will be able to plan and follow routes in any open countryside, forest, or hill environment. This is a high standard of navigation and you would be expected to show all technical aspects and techniques necessary to navigate around the hills or remote areas of the UK.
Instruction
These courses will be run by either John or Steve. John holds the Mountain Instructors Award whilst Steve is a qualified International Mountain Leader. Both have a passion for Dartmoor and adventure travel. As well as learning new navigational techniques you will also pick up useful hints and tips from how to best organise yourself on the hill, to identifying the many plants and animals on Dartmoor.
