Navigation Training

NAVIGATION TRAINING - Silver & Gold

Are Maps a mystery? No more!

These weekends are ideal for complete novice navigators or for anyone who wishes just to brush-up on their skill level.
Dartmoor National Park is an ideal location to learn or improve these skills. This practical course will introduce you to a variety of techniques, including poor visibility skills, pacing and timing. We will take you through every aspect of basic navigation from symbols, scales and grid references, to ground shape, measuring distances to taking bearings and using a compass. These courses include knowledge of safety and access issues when walking in the countryside, as well as an understanding of environmental issues and awareness of impacts.
The perfect course to provide the basic skills to explore the mountains and wild country with confidence. So come along and learn skills whilst enjoying Devon's wild and beautiful landscape!!

National Navigation Award Scheme

Spirit of Adventure is proud to be a registered provider for the NNAS. So we can offer as a free option the chance to be trained and assessed at the level appropriate to your skills. This could well be the incentive for you to improve your personal navigation skills!!!

The levels of NNAS award are as follows -

Bronze NNAS Award

Navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features, basic map interpretation and compass work is included.

Silver NNAS Award

Navigation in the countryside using skills acquired at bronze level and adding skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks, accurate compass work is required and an ability to use appropriate navigational techniques to go across country in some cases, eg. choosing an appropriate attack point.

Gold NNAS Award

Navigation in the countryside using skills of the first two levels, but adding techniques and skills for dealing with complex contour features large and small.
For those more technically minded the gold level is equal to Walking Group Leader Award (WGL) requirements.

NB: None of these awards are to be used as a leadership qualification of any kind.
